Exploring cinema's role in challenging stereotypes

I recently had the honour of presenting my essay, "Reel Change: The Power of Cinema to Counteract Hate Speech and Harmful Stereotypes Against Arabs and Muslims," at a conference held in Rabat. Though I was not able to participate in the conference in person, I was able to share my work through Zoom.

The invitation, extended by Salima, allowed me to delve into a subject very close to my heart and of significant importance in today’s global discourse. My presentation focused on the influential role of cinema in shaping societal narratives and its potential to challenge and change the harmful stereotypes surrounding Arab and Muslim communities.

The level of engagement from the audience was both heartening and enlightening. Attendees, joining from Rabat and various locations, actively participated in the discussion that followed the presentation. Their questions and insights contributed to a rich dialogue, underlining the relevance of the topic and the urgent need to address these stereotypes through powerful mediums like cinema.

The conversation explored how films can serve as a force for social change, promoting understanding and empathy by presenting stories that reflect the diversity and humanity of Arab and Muslim experiences. It was encouraging to see the shared interest among participants in exploring the nuances of representation in media and the impact it has on public perception and intercultural relations.

I am deeply grateful to Salima for this opportunity and to all the participants who engaged with the presentation, offering thoughtful feedback and sharing their perspectives. The experience reaffirmed my belief in the importance of continuing these discussions and the role of academics, filmmakers, and audiences in advocating for more inclusive and representative media. This event, despite my physical absence, was a poignant reminder of our ability to connect, learn, and inspire change, no matter the distance.
